Just as hard rubber pens needed dressing up, so chasing and gold bands were sometimes added, Eagle needed to find a way to spruce up their inexpensive brass tubes that were the basis for their inexpensive pens. Painting them was an easy solution. Shown here is the Early Eagle Rex, a hard rubber pen with metal overlay painted to resemble red hard rubber. The yellow pen is a glass cartridge pen. Lever fillers and coin fillers also came in this treatment. And two pens are textured enamel to resemble chased hard rubber. These pens are early Eagle “self fillers” that barely meet the definition.
