Standard twist piston

Many pens use this mechanism. So do a lot of converters.

The classic mechanism was patented by Pelikan in Germany in 1928, and in the United States in 1929. An excellent article about the history of this filling system is posted at The Pelikan’s Perch.

Here it is in action. Twist an end knob and it causes a rod attached to a piston to extend or retract.
